Madeline Gleeson is a Senior Lecturer at UNSW Law School and Senior Research Fellow at the Andrew & Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, where she directs Offshore Processing and Regional Protection research. She specializes in extraterritorial human rights obligations and refugee law, with fieldwork in Cambodia, Switzerland, and Indonesia. Holds a Master in International Law from the Graduate Institute Geneva, LLB (Hons) from UNSW, and Diplôme d’Études Politiques from Sciences Po Aix-en-Provence.
Research examines:
- Australia's offshore processing regime on Nauru/Manus Island
- State responsibility under international law
- OPCAT compliance in immigration detention
- Asia-Pacific refugee protection frameworks
Awarded the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Offshore: Behind the Wire on Manus and Nauru (2017). Regularly advises parliamentary committees on migration legislation and contributes to UN human rights reviews. Teaches Forced Migration & Human Rights in International Law.
