Mabel Newton is a Postgraduate Researcher at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Politics and International Relations department and Southampton Law School. Her research focuses on the impact of radical right populism on international migration norms, particularly regarding refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and US over the past two decades. She is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) through the SCDTP program.
Education:
- MA in Human Rights, University College London
Research Interests: Mabel explores how radical right populist movements reshape policies and norms around human rights, migrant rights, and asylum. Her interdisciplinary work bridges International Relations, Law, and Political Theory, with a focus on norm contestation and institutional responses. She serves as Managing Editor of Global Constitutionalism, an interdisciplinary journal advancing global constitutionalism across legal and political disciplines.
Teaching & Engagement: She has taught courses on International Relations, British Politics, and Public Law. Previously, she worked as an OISC Level 1 Immigration Adviser, assisting refugees and asylum seekers in Portsmouth.
