Prof. Dr. Maarten H. P. Kole is a Professor in the Cell Biology Group at the Faculty of Science, University of Utrecht, and leads the Axonal Signalling research team at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences, KNAW) in Amsterdam. His work bridges neurobiology, biophysics, and computational neuroscience.
- Education: Studied Biology at the University of Groningen, earned a PhD (2003) at the Leibniz Institute for Primate Research (Göttingen, Germany).
- Postdoctoral Research: Conducted at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, focusing on sub-cellular axonal recordings.
His research interests center on axonal excitability, voltage-gated ion channels, and myelination mechanisms. By combining patch-clamp electrophysiology, high-resolution microscopy, and computational modeling, he investigates how ion channels at the axon initial segment and nodes of Ranvier regulate neural computation and how myelin loss impacts these processes.
Scientific Awards:
- AW Campbell Award (2010)
- ERC Starting Grant (2011)
Kole’s team includes PhD students and postdoctoral researchers exploring topics such as ion channel plasticity, myelin remodeling, and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms. His work is supported by grants from the European Research Council and published in top-tier journals including eLife, Nature Communications, and Cell.
