Professor M.J. Kidnie is a scholar of early modern English drama and textual studies at Western University’s Department of English and Writing Studies. A Graham and Gail Wright Distinguished Scholar, they hold a PhD from the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham (1996) alongside degrees from Trinity College, University of Toronto. Their research bridges textual editing and performance studies, focusing on Shakespeare, Middleton, and Jonson. Recent projects include editing Heywood’s A Woman Killed with Kindness and co-editing Shakespeare and Textual Studies (Cambridge, 2015).
Teaching excellence awards (2012, 2013) highlight their pedagogical impact. Outreach includes work with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (University Task Force, 2003 season analysis) and Royal National Theatre. Their monograph Shakespeare and the Problem of Adaptation (2009) redefines fidelity debates through historical performance contexts. Current research explores race/gender dynamics in theatrical adaptations and Lepage’s directorial methodologies.
