Professor Lynn Calman is Co-Director of the Centre for Psychosocial Research in Cancer (CentRIC) in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton. A registered adult and mental health nurse with over 20 years of research experience, she focuses on understanding and responding to the needs of people living with and beyond cancer. She holds multiple leadership roles including Associate Director of the Southampton Academy of Research (SoAR), Executive Board member of the British Psychosocial Oncology Society (BPOS), and Workstream lead for the UK Association of Supportive Care in Cancer working group on Enhanced Supportive Care.
Her research interests center on cancer survivorship/psychosocial oncology, having led and collaborated on major research programs that have generated practice-changing findings. She is Principal Investigator for the ENABLE study focused on self-management support for people with advanced cancer, and collaborates on the ColoREctal Wellbeing (CREW) cohort study. Her research portfolio includes projects like CAN-EMPOWER, UNREACHED, and KETO-LUNG, addressing psychological distress, financial insecurity, and treatment efficacy in cancer patients.
Lynn Calman's scientific contributions have been recognized with her appointment as a 2023/2024 Florence Nightingale Leadership Scholar. She serves as External Examiner for the University of Edinburgh and is a member of the International Psycho-Oncology Society Palliative Care Education Special Interest Group, demonstrating her standing in the international research community.

Professor Calman is actively involved in research capacity building and developing psychosocial cancer care skills in the clinical workforce. She supervises students across multiple programs including BSc, MN, MSc pre-registration nursing, MSc Physiotherapy, and doctoral level. She leads the Psychological Skills in Cancer Care module and contributes to Palliative and End of Life Care teaching for nursing students. Her research team works closely with people affected by cancer as Research Partners in developing and conducting research projects.
The CentRIC team, under her co-direction, has developed significant resources including RESTORE, a web-based tool to increase confidence in activities despite cancer-related fatigue. Her research is primarily funded by organizations including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, and the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, demonstrating the practical application and impact of her work in improving cancer patient outcomes.
