Dr. Lynette Vernon is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University (ECU) and an adjunct researcher at Curtin University's National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education. She holds a PhD in Psychology from Murdoch University and has over 20 years of experience as a secondary science teacher. Her research focuses on developmental psychology, technology's impact on youth, sleep habits, and educational equity. She has been recognized with awards including the 2019 Wiley Top Downloaded Child Development Article and the 2018 Early Career Researcher Award from AARE.
Dr. Vernon’s qualifications include a PhD (2017), a BA(Hons) (2010), and degrees in Science and Education. Her work spans educational pathways, STEM promotion, and addressing disparities in university access for low-SES students. Notable contributions include the MAP4U project supporting student aspirations and evaluations of enabling programs for disadvantaged learners.
Her research interests emphasize developing evidence-based interventions for youth wellbeing, particularly around technology use and sleep. She collaborates with schools in WA’s southwest and pre-service teachers to enhance curriculum design and pedagogical practices. Recent projects include analyzing regional teacher recruitment challenges and parental mediation of digital device usage.
Awards highlight her contributions to understanding smartphone parenting dynamics and pandemic impacts on vulnerable learners.
