James Vernon is a Lecturer in Psychology & Counselling at the University of Staffordshire, serving as the Course Lead for the Psychology & Counselling program. His career journey spans diverse fields, including professional theatre as a technician, private education in music technology, and a period managing his family's business in Stoke-on-Trent. Vernon holds a BA in Contemporary Art from Manchester Metropolitan University (2002), followed by a BSc in Psychology & Counselling (Staffordshire), an MSc in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (2021), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher and Professional Education (Staffordshire).
His research interests focus on counselling practice, particularly the impact of bereavement, grief, and significant loss, as well as how life-changing illnesses and the COVID-19 pandemic have influenced client grief experiences. He explores digital counselling methodologies post-pandemic, counselling pedagogy, barriers preventing men from accessing counselling services, and the role of reflective practice in therapeutic education. Vernon emphasizes practitioner self-care and enterprise in his academic contributions.
Professional memberships include the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Psychological Society (BPS). He has contributed to the management of professional counselling organizations, securing funding, and designing therapeutic services for children and adults.
