Lynda F. Bonewald, PhD, serves as Distinguished Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine with primary appointment in the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology and secondary appointment in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. She is Founding Director of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health (ICMH), a multidisciplinary hub with over 100 members spanning 36 departments and four campuses focused on bone, muscle, and connective tissue research.
Her academic journey began with a PhD in Immunology/Microbiology from the Medical University of South Carolina. She advanced to Full Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and held leadership roles including Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Dr. Bonewald pioneered osteocyte biology research, developing foundational tools used globally to study these mechanosensory bone cells. Her current work investigates bone-muscle crosstalk during aging, exploring how bone-derived factors influence muscle health and contribute to sarcopenia and osteoporosis. This research bridges mineralized tissue biology with metabolic signaling pathways.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals dominant themes in musculoskeletal aging, osteocyte signaling networks, and inter-tissue communication. Key trends include the role of osteocytes in phosphate metabolism, identification of novel biomarkers like aminobutyric acids, and exploration of therapeutic targets for age-related musculoskeletal decline.
- Basic Research in Biological Mineralization Award (IADR)
- RIB Award (Sun Valley)
- William F. Neuman Award (ASBMR)
Continuously NIH-funded for over 30 years, Dr. Bonewald has directed major research programs including the Bone Biology Research Program and served on national advisory boards (NIDCR Scientific Councilors, NIAMS Council). Her leadership extends to presidency of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities.
The Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health under her direction integrates basic science with clinical translation across multiple institutions. Current initiatives focus on aging-related musculoskeletal decline, rare bone diseases, and developing interventions targeting the bone-muscle axis through collaborative research spanning molecular mechanisms to population studies.
