Lydia Ortega is a Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics at San Jose State University (SJSU). She also serves as Co-Graduate Advisor, overseeing graduate student affairs. Her academic career began at SJSU in 1989, where she has contributed significantly to curriculum development, including blended course design, and fostering partnerships between high schools and universities. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from George Mason University (1987).
Her research interests focus on innovative educational methods in economics, particularly leveraging computer-based learning modalities and problem-solving pedagogies. Beyond academia, she has actively participated in community service through roles at local non-profits such as the Hispanic Charity Ball and as a founding member of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley.
Ortega is also engaged in fund development initiatives to support departmental and university programs. She maintains regular office hours on Wednesdays 12–3 PM and by appointment.
