Jan English-Lueck is a Professor of Anthropology at San José State University (SJSU) and a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for the Future. Her expertise focuses on applied anthropology, work cultures, wellness, and the socio-technological dynamics of Silicon Valley. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from UC Santa Barbara (1985).
English-Lueck’s research examines the interplay between technology, work, and everyday life. She co-founded the Silicon Valley Cultures Project, exploring work-life balance and innovation ecosystems in the region. Her seminal works include Cultures@SiliconValley (2006 Diana Forsythe Prize winner) and Being and Well-being: Health and the Working Bodies of Silicon Valley. She has also co-authored Busier Than Ever! Why American Families Can’t Slow Down (2011).
Her awards include the AAA’s Diana Forsythe Prize and leadership roles in professional organizations like the Southwestern Anthropological Association (2004-2005) and the Society for the Anthropology of Work (2015-present). She previously served as Associate Dean and Interim Dean in SJSU’s College of Social Sciences, applying anthropological insights to institutional challenges.
Research interests extend to global flows, deep diversity frameworks, and community-university partnerships. Current projects include the Mosaic Atlas initiative, documenting cultural narratives through ethnographic interviews with marginalized groups in Silicon Valley.
