Lydia Hamessley is the John and Anne Fischer Professor in Fine Arts at Hamilton College, serving as Chair of the Music Department from 2001-05 and 2009-15. Her research focuses on music history, gender studies in music, and American folk traditions. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and has been recognized with major teaching awards including the Samuel and Helen Lang Prize (2013) and the Class of 1962 Outstanding Teaching Award (2007).
Her scholarly contributions include Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton (2020) and co-editing Audible Traces: Gender, Identity, and Music (1999). Her work explores intersections between music and culture, with publications on banjo history, gender in performance, and Elizabethan musical manuscripts.
