Lyde Cullen Sizer is a faculty member in the History department at Sarah Lawrence College, where she has been teaching since 1994. Her academic work focuses on the intersection of literature, politics, gender, and race in 19th- and early 20th-century American history.

Her research explores how literature shaped political discourse during the US Civil War era and its aftermath. She has also contributed to anthologies examining themes of equity, gender, and cultural identity in American history, including a co-edited volume titled The Civil War Era: An Anthology of Sources (2005).
Her notable award includes the Avery O. Craven Award from the Organization of American Historians for her book The Political Work of Northern Women Writers and the American Civil War, 1850-1872. Her teaching spans courses on cultural and political history, with recent offerings including "We Carry It Within Us": Culture and Politics in US History, 1776–1980 and Reconstructing Womanhood series examining gender roles from 1790s to 1990s.
