Luke G.G. Bhatia is a Lecturer in Global Politics at the University of Manchester since 2018, serving as MA Director for the MA Human Rights and Law programs. His research focuses on social movements in authoritarian states, particularly human rights in the Global South. He teaches courses on decolonizing human rights, global human rights frameworks, and comparative political analysis. Previously, he worked at the Commission for Racial Equality, Equality and Human Rights Commission, and the UK Department for Education.
His research interests include human rights, social movements, international political sociology, authoritarianism, Middle Eastern politics, policy making, and knowledge production in the Global South. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals aimed at promoting peace, justice, and inclusive societies.
Dr. Bhatia has received several awards, including the 2024 Decolonising the Curriculum Student Union Award and a Higher Education Academy Fellowship (2020). His scholarship emphasizes critical analyses of state repression, transnational human rights advocacy, and the interplay between local and global political dynamics.
