Manfred Elfstrom is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Philosophy, and Political Science at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus. His research focuses on Chinese politics, social movements, labor dynamics, and authoritarian governance. He holds a PhD from Cornell University, an MA from Columbia University, and a BA from Oberlin College. Elfstrom previously served as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Southern California and a China Public Policy Fellow at Harvard University's Ash Center.
His work examines how labor unrest influences state responsiveness and repression in China, with particular attention to worker mobilization strategies, legal frameworks, and authoritarian adaptation. Notable publications include Workers and Change in China: Resistance, Repression, Responsiveness (Cambridge University Press, 2021), which analyzes labor conflicts' transformative effects on the Chinese state.
Elfstrom's research has been supported by grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the National Science Foundation, and the Lee Teng-Hui Foundation. His awards include the Gordon White Prize for best article in the China Quarterly. He teaches courses on Chinese politics, comparative politics, and global studies, emphasizing critical analysis of authoritarianism and contentious politics.
Elfstrom is affiliated with the Wilson Center as a non-resident China Fellow and contributes to policy discussions on labor rights and governance in China. His work bridges social movement theory and industrial relations, offering insights into the intersections of law, labor, and state-society relations.
