Luke Carlson is an Associate Professor of Music at College of the Ozarks in Branson, MO, where he coordinates the theory and composition programs and directs the C of O orchestra. He also serves as the chair of composition for the Missouri Music Teacher's Association. His compositions have been described as "yielding fascinating timbres" (Washington Classical Review), "magical", and "otherworldly" (Philadelphia Inquirer) and "personal and strong" (New York Times).
Carlson holds a BM, magna cum laude, from the University of Oregon, a MM from Rice University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Carlson's creative work focuses on contemporary classical composition, drawing equal inspiration from classical traditions and modern aesthetics. His work engages with the continuing story of tonality while exploring new sonic territories. He crafts vibrant and profound music across various formats including orchestral works, chamber music, vocal and choral compositions, and electronic music. His compositions often incorporate literary inspirations and explore the emotional and technical possibilities of instrumental combinations. He is also an active educator who teaches courses on music notation, music appreciation, aural skills, music theory, counterpoint, orchestration, and electronic music.
Recent compositions show a growing interest in combining acoustic instruments with electronic elements, as seen in works like "Render" (clarinet & electronics), "Gamer" (percussion & electronics), and "Quinary Coils" (vibraphone & electronics). He also continues to explore traditional chamber formats while infusing them with contemporary sensibilities, as demonstrated in his "Histories" (violin & piano) and "Measure" (piano quintet). His "Patterns" series for solo piano represents a sustained exploration of pianistic textures and forms.
