Luis Rafael Herrera-Estrella is the President’s Distinguished Professor of Plant Genomics and Director of the Institute of Genomics for Crop Abiotic Stress Tolerance at Texas Tech University. He holds a Ph.D. and is a pioneering figure in plant genetic engineering, recognized as the university’s first National Academy of Sciences (NAS) member. His work focuses on plant adaptation to environmental stresses like drought, desiccation, and nutrient deficiency.
Dr. Herrera-Estrella leads the Institute of Genomics for Crop Abiotic Stress Tolerance (IGCAST), dedicated to advancing stress-tolerant crop solutions. His research also explores epigenetic integration into plant breeding and novel plant transformation methods. His arrival was supported by a $5 million Texas Governor’s University Research Initiative (GURI) grant.
- Awards: NAS Membership (preeminent scientific honor)
- Grants: $5M GURI grant
- Labs/Teams: IGCAST, Department of Plant and Soil Science
With over 200 publications, his recent landmark work includes sequencing the avocado genome, shedding light on early flowering plant evolution.
