Luigi Iuliano

Luigi Iuliano is a Professor of Internal Medicine at Sapienza University of Rome, where he serves in the Department of Medico-Surgical Sciences and Biotechnology within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine. He also holds positions as Director of The Division of Internal Medicine at Goretti-ICOT Hospital in Latina, Italy, and Associate Program Director of the Postgraduate School of Internal Medicine. Additionally, he leads the Vascular Biology, Atherothrombosis & Mass Spectrometry Lab.

Dr. Iuliano earned his MD summa cum laude from Sapienza University of Rome in 1982, followed by residency in Internal Medicine and Atherothrombosis Unit at Policlinico Umberto I University Hospital. He achieved Board Certification in Internal Medicine summa cum laude in 1987. His academic progression includes Assistant Professor (1989-2001), Associate Professor (2004), Senior Associate Professor (2008), and Full Professor qualification (2014).

His primary research focuses on oxidative stress mechanisms, particularly oxysterols (cholesterol derivatives generated enzymatically or by autoxidation) and their role in various diseases. His work spans atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, cancer, inflammation, and infertility. He is a co-founder of the European Network for Oxysterol Research (ENOR) and collaborates internationally with institutions including Karolinska Institute, Temple University, University of Toulouse, and Swansea University.

Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on oxysterols as biomarkers of oxidative stress across multiple disease contexts, with particular emphasis on neurological disorders, cardiovascular conditions, and metabolic diseases. His work increasingly incorporates lipidomics approaches to understand the complex relationships between cholesterol metabolites and human health.

Professor Iuliano has served as Editor for numerous journals including Deputy Editor of the Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Associate Editor for Frontiers in Physiology (Lipidology section), and various other editorial roles. He has received research grants from Italian government and non-profit organizations including CNR, Sapienza University, MIUR, Ministry of Environment, Fondazione Roma, AIRC, and ICFF. He directs the Vascular Biology & Atherothrombosis Laboratory and the Vascular Medicine Unit at SM Goretti Hospital.
