Frida Leonetti is a Full Professor of Endocrinology at Sapienza University of Rome, where she serves in the Department of Medical-Surgical Sciences and Biotechnologies. She is the Director of the University Diabetology Unit at SM Goretti Hospital in Latina as part of the Sapienza Pontino Pole. Her clinical work focuses on diabetology and endocrinology, with office hours held at the University Diabetology Unit of the SM Goretti Hospital, Latina.
Her academic journey began with a scientific high school diploma from Liceo Luigi Pasteur in Rome (1975), followed by a Medical degree with highest honors from Sapienza University (1980). She completed her specialization in Endocrinology (1983) and earned a PhD in Endocrinological and Metabolic Sciences (1990). Her career progression included positions as Technical Collaborator (1989), Medical Assistant (1991), and various managerial roles before becoming an Associate Professor in 2012 and qualifying for Full Professor in 2017.
Professor Leonetti's research spans multiple areas of metabolic medicine, with particular emphasis on diabetes pathophysiology, obesity complications, and diabetology. Her work explores the intricate relationships between metabolic disorders, endocrine function, and various organ systems. She has made significant contributions to understanding vitamin D metabolism in diabetes, gut microbiota alterations in obesity, and the cardiovascular implications of metabolic diseases. Her research often takes a translational approach, bridging basic science discoveries with clinical applications.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on type 2 diabetes management, NAFLD/MASLD, and the intersection of obesity with other chronic conditions. Her work increasingly addresses sex differences in metabolic disease presentation and treatment response, as well as the application of novel biomarkers for disease monitoring. The trend shows growing interest in precision medicine approaches for metabolic disorders.
Professor Leonetti has received several prestigious recognitions for her work:
- Scholarship from the Ministry of Health for research in Social Diseases focused on oncological aspects of hormone-secreting pancreatic tumors
- Scholarship from the Ministry of Public Education for improvement activities at foreign institutions
- Prize from the Italian Diabetes Society for research improvement activities in the United States
As an active researcher and clinician, Professor Leonetti has led numerous studies including the Sapienza University Mortality and Morbidity Event Rate (SUMMER) study in diabetes. She serves as an expert for the European Medical Agency and has coordinated the Erasmus Program for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Sapienza University. Her current research includes investigating Epicardial Adipose Tissue as a potential early marker for Covid-19 severity in metabolic patients.
Professor Leonetti maintains an active laboratory focused on metabolic disease mechanisms, with particular interest in adipose tissue biology, gut-liver axis interactions, and biomarker discovery for diabetes complications. Her team collaborates extensively with international researchers, including previous work at Yale University where she served as a Research Fellow in 1985.
