Prof. Andreas Birkenfeld is the Director of the Institute of Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) at Helmholtz Munich and Chairman of the Department of Diabetology, Endocrinology and Nephrology at the University Hospital Tübingen. He serves as a speaker for the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD). His clinical training was completed at Charité-Berlin and Yale University School of Medicine, where he studied insulin resistance mechanisms under Gerald I. Shulman.
His research focuses on reversing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes pathophysiology, having discovered the hormonal heart-adipose tissue axis (ANP) and the INDY plasma membrane transporter. He leads international trials evaluating diabetes/obesity treatments like Semaglutide and investigates factors driving diabetes remission.
