Luigi Achilli is a Part-time Assistant Professor at the European University Institute, specializing in political anthropology with fieldwork expertise across conflict zones. His research examines irregular migration, refugee agency, and political violence through ethnographic methodologies.
Research Focus: Achilli investigates how marginalized populations navigate displacement and political conflict. Core interests include:
- Human smuggling economies in Mediterranean and Central American corridors
- Child recruitment by armed groups

- Transnational crime governance
