Dr. Ludwika Jończyk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medieval and Early Modern Archaeology at the Faculty of Archaeology, University of Warsaw. Her office hours are Monday 11:30–13:15 in room 3.21, and she can be reached at ludwika.sawicka@uw.edu.pl.
Research interests are centered on the archaeology of the Old Prussians and Balts during the early medieval period, with a particular emphasis on funeral rites, material culture, and interactions with neighboring cultures. Methodologically she integrates traditional excavation with archaeometric analyses of ceramics and metals.
Her scholarly output over the past two decades (2006–2024) reveals a sustained focus on early medieval Baltic cemeteries, especially the Mosiężysko cemetery in Szurpiły, which serves as a core case-study for exploring burial customs, social stratification, and inter-regional contacts among the Yotvingians and Sudovians. Recent papers highlight archaeometric approaches to pottery provenance and the social significance of nomadic imports.
Currently she directs the NCN-funded project “Mosiężysko” (2020–2024), a comprehensive study of field-research results from the Szurpiły cemetery aimed at re-evaluating early medieval burial traditions in north-eastern Poland.
Laboratory & field teams: While no formal lab name is provided, her publications indicate collaboration with archaeometrists for ceramic and metal analyses, and she has conducted systematic field surveys and excavations in the Suwałki region within the Suwalski Landscape Park and adjacent areas.
