Jörg Petrasch is Senior Lecturer in Archaeology (Pre- and Protohistory) at the University of Tübingen's Faculty of Humanities, Department of Prehistory and Medieval Archaeology. He holds an MA (1984) and PhD (1988) from the Universities of Frankfurt/M. and Tübingen, with his doctoral research focusing on Middle Neolithic circular enclosures (Kreisgrabenanlagen) in Central Europe. As field director of excavations spanning Neolithic to Medieval periods, he has led projects across Germany and collaborated internationally, including a current German-Hungarian project in Neolithic settlements at Fajsz, Hungary.
His research explores the Neolithic and Copper Age (7th-3rd millennium BC) of Central Europe through interdisciplinary approaches, with emphasis on:
- Cultural history and societal development
- Settlement patterns and landscape archaeology
- Origins of warfare and conflict studies
- Religious practices through material culture
- Ceramic analysis and trade networks
Petrasch's publications demonstrate consistent focus on social structures, ritual landscapes, and demographic shifts during European Neolithization. Recent works (2010-2016) particularly examine political organization, burial customs, and violence in prehistoric communities.
