Lucija Muehlenbachs is a Full Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary, concurrently serving as a University Fellow at Resources for the Future in Washington, DC. Her research focuses on environmental and energy economics, particularly the socioeconomic impacts of shale gas development, oil and gas regulations, and environmental justice. She holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural & Resource Economics from the University of Maryland (2009), an M.S. from the same institution (2008), and a B.S. in Physical Sciences & Japanese from the University of Alberta (2002).
Her work examines topics such as methane leak regulation, hazardous waste management, and the economic implications of energy policies. Notable contributions include analyzing shale gas development’s effects on property values, traffic accidents, and environmental liabilities. She has received awards including the CWEC Young Researcher Award (2019) and the GREAT Supervisor Award (2018).
Muehlenbachs collaborates with institutions like ETH Zurich and has published extensively on topics ranging from hydraulic fracturing’s water impacts to AI-assisted research reproducibility. Her research integrates econometric methods with policy analysis to address challenges in energy, environment, and natural resource governance.
