Luciano Beheregaray is a Matthew Flinders Professor of Biodiversity Genomics at Flinders University, where he has held roles such as Research Section Lead of Ecology, Evolution and Environment (2020-2023) and Head of the Molecular Ecology Lab (MELFU). His affiliations include the School of Biological Sciences and leadership in interdisciplinary research initiatives. He has a global reputation for research in evolutionary genetics, conservation biology, and genomics, particularly focusing on fish populations and climate change impacts.
- B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biological Oceanography from the University of Rio Grande, Brazil (1991, 1995)
- Ph.D. in Evolutionary Genetics from Macquarie University, Australia (2001)
- Postdoctoral Fellowships at Yale University (2001-2003) and sabbaticals at institutions worldwide
His research interests span adaptive resilience in fish populations, ecological genomics, and conservation strategies for freshwater species. Key projects include investigating the genomic responses of species to climate change and restoring biodiversity through captive breeding and reintroduction programs. He has secured over $14M in research funding, including ARC Future Fellowships and grants for genetic rescue approaches.
Beheregaray has graduated 25 PhD students and 31 Honours students, fostering the next generation of researchers. He leads initiatives like the Annual HDR Conference and collaborates globally on media engagement, policy advisory roles, and scientific editing. His work bridges academia and conservation practice, emphasizing genomic tools to address biodiversity challenges.
Notable honors include the Matthew Flinders Professorship (2022) and inclusion in the World’s Top 2% Scientists (since 2020). His research spans from Amazonia and Galápagos ecosystems to Australian freshwater systems, with a focus on genomic solutions for climate resilience.
