Dr. Trevor Pitcher is a Professor at the University of Windsor's Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) and Director of the Freshwater Restoration Ecology Centre. His research focuses on evolutionary ecology, reproductive biology, and conservation of freshwater fishes including Chinook Salmon, Redside Dace, and Lake Sturgeon. He employs molecular ecology techniques such as environmental DNA analysis and population genetics to study genetic quality in wild populations and applications in conservation aquaculture.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Zoology from University of Toronto (2004), M.Sc. from York University (1997), and B.Sc. from York University (1995). His interdisciplinary work bridges fundamental evolutionary research with applied conservation outcomes, particularly in captive breeding programs for endangered species.
Recent publications demonstrate strong focus on conservation physiology, thermal adaptation in fishes, and reintroduction biology. Research frequently examines stress physiology in salmonids, thermal tolerance limits in endangered species, and optimization of translocation protocols. Collaborative work spans fisheries management, genomics, and climate adaptation studies.
Dr. Pitcher directs the Freshwater Restoration Ecology Centre, a unique facility supporting experimental populations of endangered species and providing experiential learning opportunities. The center enables research on Great Lakes ecosystems through direct access to Detroit River habitats.
