Lucia Banci serves as Director of the Centro di Risonanze Magnetiche (CERM) at the University of Florence and holds the position of Professor of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science. Her academic career spans over three decades at the institution, progressing from Tenured Researcher (1983-1987) through Associate Professor positions in both Science and Pharmacy faculties, to full Professor since 1999.
Dr. Banci's research focuses on structural biology with specialization in NMR spectroscopy applications to biological systems. Her groundbreaking work encompasses metallobiology (particularly copper homeostasis), cellular structural biology, and the innovative field of structural vaccinology which she pioneered. Her most significant contributions include developing methods for in-cell NMR to observe proteins at atomic resolution within living human cells, and applying structural insights to design the MenB vaccine against Meningococcus B through rational antigen engineering.
Analysis of her publication record (2009-2013) reveals three dominant research trajectories: 1) Metal ion trafficking mechanisms (particularly copper), 2) Structural vaccinology applications for vaccine development, and 3) In-cell NMR methodology for observing protein dynamics in native environments.
