Luc van Doorslaer is a Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Tartu’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures (full-time since 2018). He holds concurrent positions as Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University and Professor at KU Leuven. His career includes roles as Vice President of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST), President of CETRA (KU Leuven’s Centre for Translation Studies), and editor of key journals like Translation in Society. He earned his PhD in Translation Studies from KU Leuven in 2000.
His research focuses on Translation Studies, Journalistic Translation, Imagology, and the sociocultural dimensions of translation. Notable projects include the Horizon 2020 Marie Curie project on censorship in Iran and studies on national image transfer through translation. He has supervised 16 PhDs and co-organized over 30 international conferences.
Publications emphasize translation in museums, media translation, and cultural transfer. Recent work explores museum translation as sensitive cultural mediation (e.g., AfricaMuseum case), journalistic translation’s societal role, and imagological dimensions of translated texts. His interdisciplinary approach bridges translation with sociology, media studies, and cultural policy.
