Luc Nijs serves as Associate Professor in Early Childhood Music Education at the University of Luxembourg's Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (Department of Education and Social Work) and holds a Visiting Professor position at Ghent University, Belgium. He directs the Bachelor in Music Education program at Luxembourg and contributes to the Jonet Chair on Music Making and Social Action as a founding member.
His academic credentials include a PhD in Arts Sciences (Systematic Musicology), MA degrees in Music Performance (clarinet) and Philosophy, and a Teacher Certificate for clarinet, saxophone, and ensemble instruction. Prior to academia, he taught in Flemish music schools and performed with ensembles including the Flemish Opera.
Nijs's research centers on embodied music cognition, examining the musician-instrument relationship, movement's role in instrumental learning, and technology's capacity to foster embodied pedagogy. Recent work expands into community music's social impact, particularly in asylum centers. His methodology integrates theoretical development, empirical studies, and practical application, notably through the Music Paint Machine project which visualizes musical interaction through movement.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a trajectory from foundational technological applications (e.g., Augmented Reality in music education) toward socially engaged practices, with consistent emphasis on embodiment across contexts from instrumental training to refugee support. Key thematic clusters include participatory creativity, cross-cultural music facilitation, and teacher development in technology integration.
His scientific recognition includes:
- 3rd Prize at the TedX Ghent Research Rally (2019)
- EAPRIL Best Research and Practice Project Award (2012)
- Prix Leopold Génin (1997)
As course director and educator at both universities, Nijs shapes music pedagogy curricula while influencing policy through former advisory roles with the Flemish Ministry of Education and leadership of the AEC Digitization Working Group (2017-2021). His collaborative projects like the Music Paint Machine demonstrate sustained commitment to bridging research, technology, and community practice.
Nijs co-founded the Jonet Chair on Music Making and Social Action and maintains active research networks through Ghent University's IPEM institute. His work with asylum centers and community music facilitators represents evolving lab directions focused on music's role in social resilience.
