Lourenzo Fernández Prieto is a Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Santiago de Compostela since 2005. He serves as Scientific Director of the CISPAC (University Research Center for Cultural Atlantic Landscapes) and President of the Society for the Study of Agrarian History (SEHA). He is also a member of the Real Academia Galega since 2023.
His research focuses on rural societies, agricultural technological change, and the socio-political construction of the Francoist dictatorship. Notable visiting roles include Princeton University (Oates Fellow), CUNY Graduate Center, and University College Cork. He completed a PostDoc at the Institute of Historical Research, London (1991).
As an academic leader, he has directed departments of Contemporary/US History (until 2016) and USC History (2020-2021), and served as Vice Chancellor for Institutional Relations (2007-2009). His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary issues like agroecology, democratic memory, and rural development.
Recent contributions include 22 competitive research projects, coordination of the REVOLTA Agroecology Network, and leadership in initiatives like the Laboratorio EcoSocial do Barbanza. His publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to rural history, technological adoption, and historical memory.
He has advised 22 PhD theses and supervised over 50 projects, contributing to both academic and public discourse on Spain’s historical legacy and rural transformation.
