Louise Newman

Louise Newman is an Associate Professor at the University of Florida, where she has been since 1993. Prior to this, she taught at Brown University and Harvard University. She holds a PhD (1992) and M.A. (1986) from Brown University, a Postbac in Economics from the Université de Genève, and an A.B. in English and American Literature from Harvard University, cum laude.

Her research focuses on the racial origins of American feminism, popular science, and cultural memory in film. Notable works include White Women’s Rights: Racial Origins of Feminism in the United States (1999) and the edited volume Men’s Ideas/Women’s Realities: Popular Science, 1870–1915 (1985). Current work includes a manuscript titled Representing the Sixties: Cultural Memories and Hollywood Films.

Her teaching includes courses such as Woman, Work and Family, Gender and History, History by Hollywood, and Modern America Seminar.
