Allyson Hobbs is an Associate Professor of United States History at Stanford University, serving as Director of African and African American Studies and Kleinheinz Family University Fellow in Undergraduate Education. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and an A.B. from Harvard University. Her research focuses on racial identity, African American history, and the intersection of race and space, with notable works like A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life, which won major academic awards. She contributes to The New Yorker and has appeared on NPR, C-SPAN, and MSNBC. Her current projects explore African American travel experiences and testimonies of sexual violence.
Education: Ph.D., University of Chicago (2009); A.B., Harvard University (1997). Awards include the NAACP Freedom Fighter Award and teaching accolades. She teaches courses on American identity, African American women’s history, and cultural history, emphasizing storytelling and social justice.
