Dr. Christy Pichichero holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor of History, French, and African and African American Studies at George Mason University. She is affiliated with the Women and Gender Studies program, the War and the Military in Society initiative, and the Center for Mason Legacies. Her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary DEI activism.
Education: B.A. in Comparative Literature (Princeton University), B.M. in Voice and Opera (Eastman School of Music), Ph.D. in French Studies (Stanford University). She has held fellowships at institutions including Stanford Humanities Center, King’s College Cambridge, and École Normale Supérieure.
Research focuses on French Empire history, African diaspora studies, critical race theory, and inclusive pedagogy. Notable publications include The Military Enlightenment (Cornell UP, 2017) and experimental biographies of figures like Joseph Bologne. She frequently engages with media (NPR, C-SPAN, Forbes) on race, academia, and social justice.
Leadership roles include Director of Faculty Diversity in CHSS, co-chair of GMU’s Anti-Racism Task Force, and past president of the Western Society for French History. Awards include the 2021 Presidential Medal for Diversity Excellence and NAACP Arlington Award.
Advocacy work includes pioneering DEI initiatives like Stanford’s DARE program and mentoring initiatives. Current projects explore African diasporic identities and slavery’s legacies across empires.
