Dr. Wendi N. Manuel-Scott is a Professor of Integrative Studies and History at George Mason University (GMU) and co-director of the Center for Mason Legacies (CML). She holds affiliate appointments in Women and Gender Studies, African and African American Studies, and the John Mitchell, Jr. Program for History, Justice, and Race. Her research focuses on liberatory pedagogy, Black resistance, and public memory, with notable projects like the Enslaved People of George Mason Memorial and the Black Lives Next Door (BLND) initiative.
Education: Ph.D. in History from Howard University.
Research Interests: Critical Race Pedagogy, African American History, Black Feminist Theory, and community-engaged scholarship. Her work emphasizes disrupting exclusionary academic frameworks through interdisciplinary methods such as citational fugitivity and speculative storytelling.
Grants & Partnerships: Secured over $100,000 in public history contracts via CML, including projects with Fairfax and Loudoun counties documenting Black landownership and displacement (e.g., the Village of Willard).
Awards: 2021 GMU Faculty of the Year, 2019 Teaching Excellence Award, and 2017 Alcalde Medal for Diversity & Inclusion.
Teaching: Courses span African American Studies, Social Justice Education, and Black Feminist Thought. She pioneered the Paul Robeson Saturday Leadership Academy, a STEM program for underrepresented youth.
