Dr. Louise Ivers is a Professor of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and a Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). She serves as Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute and Director of the MGH Center for Global Health, holding the David Bangsberg MD, MPH Endowed Chair in Global Health Equity. Her work focuses on advancing health equity through integrated health programs, research, and advocacy targeting impoverished communities, particularly in areas like infectious disease control (e.g., cholera, HIV/AIDS), food insecurity, and pandemic response.
Dr. Ivers completed her medical training at University College Dublin, followed by residency in internal medicine and infectious diseases training at MGH/Brigham. She holds advanced degrees from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (diploma in tropical medicine) and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (MPH). Her research emphasizes cholera epidemiology, vaccine efficacy, and the intersection of food security with health outcomes.
Her scientific contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed articles, a textbook on food insecurity and public health, and impactful work on global health equity frameworks. Awards include the Bailey K Ashford Medal and recognition from the American Society for Clinical Investigation. She actively engages in policy advocacy, emphasizing anti-racism and anti-colonialism in global health practices.
Key areas of focus include strengthening health systems in low-resource settings, outbreak response (e.g., Ebola, mpox), and leveraging technology for public health interventions (e.g., contact tracing during the pandemic). She collaborates with institutions globally, including Partners in Health, to advance equitable healthcare delivery.
