Lori Marino serves as an Adjunct Professor of Animal Studies at New York University while leading major animal advocacy initiatives including the Whale Sanctuary Project (as Founder/President) and The Kimmela Center for Scholarship-based Animal Advocacy (as Executive Director). She also co-directs the Animal Law and Science Project at George Washington University alongside Professor Kathy Hessler.
Her research specializes in evolutionary neuroscience, examining brain development and intelligence in cetaceans (dolphins and whales), primates, and farmed animals, with critical analysis of captivity's physiological and psychological impacts on wildlife. This work uniquely integrates hard science with legal frameworks through her animal law expertise.
Marino has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications spanning neuroscience, marine biology, and policy advocacy, establishing foundational research on cetacean cognition. Her scholarship directly informs sanctuary development and anti-captivity legislation through science-based advocacy.
She actively directs three major organizations:
- Whale Sanctuary Project (Founder/President)
- The Kimmela Center for Scholarship-based Animal Advocacy (Executive Director)
- Animal Law and Science Project at George Washington University (Co-Director)
