Lori Marino is an Adjunct Professor at New York University's Arts & Science division. She serves as the founder and President of the Whale Sanctuary Project and Executive Director of The Kimmela Center for Scholarship-based Animal Advocacy. Previously, she spent 20 years on the faculty at Emory University.

Her research focuses on the evolution of brain and intelligence in dolphins, whales, primates, and farmed animals, as well as the effects of captivity on wildlife. Notably, she co-authored a landmark 2001 study demonstrating mirror self-recognition in dolphins. She actively bridges science with animal law and policy, advising initiatives like the Canadian Senate Bill S203 (2019), which banned dolphin and whale captivity. She has contributed to documentaries such as Blackfish and Seaspiracy.
