Lori Hartmann is the Frank B. and Virginia Hower Professor of International Studies at Centre College, where she has served since 1999. She is Co-Chair of the African and African American Studies Program and Chair of the International Studies and Politics Programs. Hartmann returned to full-time faculty in 2022 after directing the Center for Global Citizenship from 2020 to 2022.

Research Interests: Hartmann's scholarship centers on African politics, women and development in West Africa, and the political economy of development. Her work explores the intersections of gender, literature, and national identity, particularly in Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo. She also contributes to political science pedagogy, examining how concepts like neoliberalism can be taught critically.
Publication Trends: Over the past two decades, Hartmann's research has evolved from fieldwork in Niger on women's education and development discourse to literary analysis of African novels and peacebuilding in the DRC. Her recent work bridges political science and literary studies, focusing on allegories of justice and nationalism.

Advising and Grants: Hartmann has led student groups to Cameroon during multiple CentreTerms (2004, 2009, 2011, 2015) and directed Centre College’s program in Strasbourg, France (2006-07, 2012). Her research has been supported by a Fulbright Fellowship and Rotary Scholarship, which enabled fieldwork in Ethiopia and Senegal, respectively.
