Lizette Gradén is a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Ethnology within the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences at Lund University's Faculty of Humanities and Theology. Her academic work focuses on ethnology and cultural analysis with particular expertise in museum studies and heritage practices. Based at Helgonavägen 3 in Lund (Room LUX:C456), she maintains an active research profile with 59 documented research outputs and involvement in 20 research projects.
Gradén's research interests center on ethnology, museum studies, cultural heritage, and contemporary culture. Her work explores how cultural heritage is constructed, preserved, and presented, with particular attention to museum practices, local culture, and collection studies. She investigates the complex relationships between heritage, identity, and contemporary society, examining how cultural institutions navigate economic constraints while maintaining their missions.
Her recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a consistent focus on ethnological approaches to cultural heritage, museum practices, and identity formation. These works span analytical frameworks for understanding performativity, studies of burial places as cultural landscapes, examinations of Swedish women's cultural entrepreneurship in American contexts, and critical reviews of heritage construction in diaspora communities. Her research shows a clear trajectory toward understanding how cultural institutions adapt to contemporary challenges while preserving heritage values.
Gradén has received significant recognition for her scholarly contributions, including:
- American Folklore Society Elli Könges (2022)
- Western Association of Museums for project excellence (2013)
- Virginia Folkins Folklore Award for project excellence (2013)
- Malmberg Award for research (2006)
- Kungl. Gustav Adolfs akademiens pris för avhandling (2004)
She is actively involved in multiple research projects including 'Framtida begravningsplatser' (Future Burial Places, 2025-2026), 'Vems kulturarv räknas när budgeten är tajt?' (Whose cultural heritage counts when the budget is tight?), and 'CROCUS Kulturens rum och kreativitetens villkor' (CROCUS Cultural Spaces and Conditions of Creativity). Her work demonstrates strong collaboration across institutional boundaries, with 191 documented academic activities including conference participation, board memberships, and workshop organization.
Gradén contributes to the academic community through leadership roles in research networks and projects focused on cultural heritage, museum practices, and ethnological approaches to contemporary social issues. Her involvement in the research node for aesthetic studies and various museum-related projects positions her at the intersection of academic research and practical cultural institution management.
