Liz McMahon is a retired Professor of Mathematics at Lafayette College, known for her work in combinatorics, finite geometry, and Cayley graphs. She co-authored The Joy of SET, a book exploring the mathematical dimensions of the popular SET card game with her family. Her research includes polynomial invariants, affine geometry structures (e.g., AG(4,3)), and maximal cap partitions. She holds an AB from Mount Holyoke College (1975), MS from University of Michigan (1978), and PhD from University of North Carolina (1982), specializing in non-commutative rings.
Her teaching spanned theoretical mathematics, calculus workshops, and a Women's and Gender Studies (WGS) course on Gender and Science. She has collaborated on projects like Cap Builder, a tool for constructing maximal point sets in affine spaces. Her academic travels include sabbaticals in New Zealand (2007), Montana (2006), and London (2007), with research engagements at institutions like the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge.
Her work intersects recreational mathematics, algebraic structures, and educational outreach. Though retired, her research interests remain active in combinatorial geometry and mathematical games. She is also an avid traveler, rock climber, and music enthusiast.
