Liv Bugge serves as Associate Professor of Sculpture and Installation at the Academy of Fine Art, Oslo National Academy of the Arts. An internationally exhibited artist, she has presented solo shows at Marabouparken Konsthall (Stockholm), Kunstnernes Hus (Oslo), and Sørlandets Kunstmuseum (Kristiansand), and participated in the 2022 Venice Biennale and Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art.
She earned her PhD from Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2019 with the dissertation 'The Other Wild: Touching Art as Confrontation' after studying at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and Belgium's Higher Institute for Fine Arts.
Bugge's research critically examines how societal mechanisms internalize normative ethics around dichotomies like life/non-life and human/nature through queer and feminist lenses. Her current practice confronts Norway's oil dependency via projects like 'Goliat, Draugen & Maria' (2021), which uses bathymetric data from offshore oil fields to create sculptures and augmented reality experiences that question cultural relationships with fossil fuels.
Analysis of her 2018-2022 publications reveals consistent engagement with norm-critical frameworks, environmental critique (particularly oil industry impacts), #MeToo movement responses, and collaborative artistic methodologies. Her doctoral work established theoretical foundations for using art as confrontation, while later projects extend these ideas into public-facing installations and digital interventions.
In pedagogy, Bugge replaces traditional critiques with 'group-efforts,' fostering collaborative environments where students actively develop each other's work. She argues conventional critique formats reinforce norms by focusing on deficiencies rather than collective growth, advocating for safe, productive spaces that prioritize mutual advancement through norm-critical teaching methods.
From 2012-2020, she co-founded FRANK with artist Sille Storihle—a collaborative platform for critical discourse in contemporary art practice that facilitated experimental projects and cross-disciplinary dialogue within Oslo's art community.
