Dr. Lisette van Beek is a postdoctoral researcher at the Urban Futures Studio within the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University. Her work focuses on climate policy, environmental governance, and the role of narratives and discourse in shaping climate futures. She holds a PhD in Climate Imaginaries (2019–2023), supervised by Prof. Maarten Hajer and Prof. Detlef van Vuuren, and is currently exploring the transformative role of universities in the climate crisis through her postdoc project funded by Pathways to Sustainability.
Her research integrates critical interpretive analysis with transdisciplinary collaborations involving artists, policymakers, and citizens. Notable projects include the CLIMAGINARIES initiative examining Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and the development of a citizen engagement tool for Dutch climate policy. She also coordinates the Mixed Classroom on Just Transitions and blogs about reimagining universities in the Climate University Express series.
Van Beek’s publications emphasize the socio-political dimensions of climate modeling, governance, and participatory processes. Her work has been featured in journals like Environmental Science and Policy, Global Environmental Change, and Energy Research and Social Science. She received the Pathways to Sustainability Award in 2021.
