Lise-Lotte Gundersen is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oslo, where she leads the Section for Catalysis and Organic Chemistry. She has been a faculty member since 1996, becoming a full Professor in 2001. Her work bridges synthetic organic chemistry with medicinal applications, with particular focus on marine-derived compounds.
Her educational background includes:
- Cand. pharm. (Ms. pharm.), Department of Pharmacy, University of Oslo, 1987
- Dr. scient. (PhD), Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, 1991
- Post doc. (NATO Science Fellow), Yale University, 1992
Gundersen's research program centers on synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry, with special emphasis on marine natural products and antimicrobial agents. She develops innovative methodologies for synthesizing complex heterocyclic compounds, which have applications in drug discovery. Her work often bridges the gap between fundamental organic synthesis and biological applications, particularly in the areas of antibiotic development and marine pharmacology.
Her publication record shows consistent productivity with over 30 publications since 2011, demonstrating expertise in heterocyclic chemistry, particularly with phenanthridines, purines, and marine natural product analogs. Her recent work has increasingly focused on marine-derived antimicrobial compounds and their synthetic analogs, reflecting her commitment to addressing antibiotic resistance through chemical synthesis.
She has held numerous leadership positions including Head of the Organic Chemistry Section (2014-present) and has been actively involved in the academic community through membership on the international scientific committee for the European Symposia on Organic Chemistry (ESOC) and as Norwegian representative to EUCHEM's Organic Chemistry Division.
