Lisa Skogens is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Social Work, Stockholm University, specializing in addiction research and recovery processes. She leads studies on substance use disorders with a focus on user perspectives, gender differences, and longitudinal outcomes. Her work examines recovery mechanisms across diverse populations including marginalized groups and young adults.
Her primary research interests include:
- Comparative analysis of recovery processes between demographic groups (gender, social status)
- Long-term treatment outcomes for substance abuse disorders
- Clinical and social interventions for co-occurring mental health and addiction problems
- Therapeutic alliance dynamics in group treatment settings
- Social determinants of addiction recovery
Skogens' recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on longitudinal studies of recovery trajectories, with recurring themes examining gender-specific treatment outcomes, mortality predictors among substance users, and the evolution of recovery identities over time. Her work consistently integrates qualitative analysis of lived experiences with clinical intervention frameworks.
She leads or collaborates on several research projects including:
- Preventing ill-health among relatives of people with substance abuse problems (ongoing)
- Recovery and identity: 10-year follow-up of treatment patients
- Five-year follow-up study of adults treated for psychosocial problems
- The future of social service work with substance use (FUSS)
Skogens co-leads the Substance Use Group (SUG) and participates in the Addiction Research Group (ARG), conducting interdisciplinary research on behavioral problems including gambling addiction and polysubstance use.
