Therese Reitan is an Associate Professor in Political Science and a Researcher at the Department of Public Health Sciences, Stockholm University, affiliated with the Centre on Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs (SoRAD). Her research focuses on substance abuse treatment systems, compulsory care policies, maternal health in addiction contexts, and healthcare governance. She has investigated opioid substitution treatment outcomes, mortality risks post-compulsory care, and polydrug use patterns among pregnant individuals.
Her work bridges public health and policy, examining ethical dilemmas in compulsory care for substance users, particularly during pregnancy. Current projects include opioid treatment effects on client mortality and policies addressing problem gambling. She supervises two PhD students and collaborates on multidisciplinary projects analyzing healthcare systems and legal frameworks.
Publications highlight themes like post-treatment mortality risks, longitudinal maternal-child health outcomes, and the co-production of public services with involuntary users. Her research underscores systemic gaps in addiction care and advocates for evidence-based interventions to improve health equity.
