Alexander Björk is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Social Work, Stockholm University. He is actively involved in research on evidence-based practice, standardization, and assessment instruments within social services, with a particular focus on the substance abuse field.
His research interests include:
- Evidence-based practice implementation in social work
- Standardization of documentation in social services
- Use of assessment instruments in substance abuse treatment
- Organizational aspects of evidence-based interventions
- Motivational Interviewing in social work practice
Björk's research examines how evidence-based practices are actually implemented in real-world social service settings, challenging some common assumptions about evidence-based practice. His work focuses on the tensions between standardized procedures and the complex realities of social work practice, particularly in the substance abuse field. He investigates how social workers navigate between different organizational logics and adapt evidence-based interventions to fit their specific contexts.
His notable publications span topics from the standardization of social services documentation to the implementation challenges of evidence-based interventions like Motivational Interviewing. His research reveals that evidence-based practice is often more of a bureaucratic project controlled by managers rather than a professional discussion among practitioners.
Björk is currently working on research projects related to municipal child welfare and the future of social service work with substance use. He is a member of both the Addiction Research Group (ARG) and The Substance Use Group (SUG) at Stockholm University.
