Lisa Marie Hempel is a research associate and doctoral student affiliated with the University of Erfurt (Faculty of Arts) and the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) in Hamburg. Her work focuses on the psychological and behavioral dimensions of climate action, particularly in vulnerable populations, and the development of measurement instruments for climate-related research.
- Master of Science in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, Technical University of Dresden (2024)
- Bachelor of Science in Psychology, University of Potsdam (2021)
Her research interests lie at the intersection of health psychology, environmental psychology, and global health. She investigates how future-oriented thinking and emotional responses to climate change influence societal, political, and individual willingness to act. A key aspect is refining psychological tools to assess climate justice and eco-anxiety, bridging climate science with human behavior.
Her recent publications emphasize climate anxiety measurement, intergenerational climate equity, and the role of perceived effectiveness in climate policy acceptance. These works highlight her interdisciplinary approach to planetary health challenges.
As part of the Health Communication Working Group at BNITM and the Institute for Planetary Health Behavior (IPB), she contributes to projects like the Planetary Health Action Survey (PACE), integrating behavioral science into climate and health protection strategies.
