Lisa Kane Low is a Professor and Carolyn M. Sampselle Collegiate Professor of Nursing at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, with a joint appointment in the Department of Health Behavior and Clinical Sciences. She also serves as Senior Associate Dean for Professional Graduate Studies and Professional Relations. Her roles include clinical practice as a certified nurse midwife at the University of Michigan Health System and leadership in global health initiatives.
Education: PhD in Nursing (2001) and Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan, MS in Midwifery (1987) from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and BSN (1984) from the University of Michigan.
Research Interests: Focus on optimizing childbirth practices, preventing perineal trauma, and advancing evidence-based maternity care. Her work includes global health projects in Honduras to improve Safe Motherhood policies and clinical trials on labor management and postpartum recovery.
Grants & Programs: Lead or co-investigator in NIH-funded studies such as the SCOR Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Women’s Pelvic Floor Health, the GLADIOLUS RCT for urinary incontinence, and the DiMEND project defining normal delivery parameters.
Teaching: Courses include Care of Childbearing Women, International Women’s Health, and Perspectives in Women’s Health. Engages ~400 undergraduates annually through non-traditional service learning programs.
Awards: Honored with Fellowships in the American Academy of Nursing and American College of Nurse Midwives, plus awards for teaching, research, and undergraduate education.
Service: Immediate Past President of the American College of Nurse Midwives, editorial board member for International Journal of Childbirth, and active in global midwifery advocacy.
