Lisa Johansson is a Research Fellow in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Umeå University, working within the Anna Arnqvist Björklund group at Kemihuset (K) campus in Umeå. Her primary affiliation centers on investigating bacterial adaptation mechanisms in gastric pathogens.
Her research focuses on Helicobacter pylori pathogenesis, specifically examining how this bacterium adapts to oxidative stress during host inflammation. With nearly half the global population infected by H. pylori, her work addresses its role as the primary risk factor for peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. Using the SabA adhesion protein as a model system, she studies bacterial binding to sLex-receptors in inflamed and premalignant tissue to elucidate molecular mechanisms enabling lifelong infection and disease progression.
As a core member of the Anna Arnqvist Lab, her research bridges molecular microbiology and clinical pathology, contributing to understanding oncogenic pathway activation through inflammation-induced DNA damage. This work has significant implications for developing interventions targeting bacterial adaptation strategies in gastric carcinogenesis.
