Anders Esberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Odontology at Umeå University, Sweden. He holds academic qualifications as a Docent (equivalent to Readership) and specializes in cariology and oral microbiology. His work focuses on understanding the genetic, microbial, and dietary factors influencing dental caries, periodontal disease, and systemic health associations.
Research interests include disease subtyping (e.g., early childhood caries and periodontitis), microbiome interactions between oral and gut systems, and biomarker discovery for inflammatory conditions. He leads studies such as the PerioGene North project and investigates how dietary patterns and oral hygiene practices impact oral microbiota composition and health outcomes.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches linking microbiology, genetics, and clinical epidemiology. Recent work explores TMAO biomarkers in metabolic syndrome, gut microbiota shifts due to mouthwash use, and polygenic scores for caries prediction. His projects often involve large cohorts and longitudinal datasets, such as the Northern Sweden Diet Database and the MAX study.
Esberg collaborates on translational research, including proteomic analysis of periodontitis relapse and saliva microbiome profiling. He also studies how taste genetics and maternal dietary preferences influence child health behaviors.
