Dr. Lisa Ellis is an Associate Professor of Biology at Houston Christian University (HCU), serving within the College of Science and Engineering. She is also the Program Coordinator for the Biology (BS) and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BS) programs, Secondary Athletics Certification Officer (ACO), and a member of the QEP Implementation Committee. Dr. Ellis earned her PhD in Biology from Texas A&M University and her BS with Honors in Biology, Summa Cum Laude, from Sam Houston State University.
Education:
- PhD in Biology, Texas A&M University
- BS with Honors in Biology, Summa Cum Laude, Sam Houston State University
Research Interests: Dr. Ellis's research focuses on the genetic and environmental effects on Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) development and behavior. Her work explores how gene expression patterns are influenced by social interactions, mating behaviors, and environmental factors such as diet. She integrates metacognitive learning strategies into her teaching to enhance student success.
Scientific Awards:
- BEST in COSE Award (2019)
- First Year Advocate Award (2015-2016)
- Biology Graduate Teaching Award (2010)
- Outstanding Graduate Student Poster Presentation Award, Texas Genetics Society (2009)
- Felton F. Waggoner Hall of Honor Nominee
Teaching & Service: Dr. Ellis teaches a wide range of courses including Introductory Biology, Genetics, Neuroscience, and Human Anatomy & Physiology. She serves as Chair of HCU’s Institutional Review Board and has been instrumental in developing the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) titled Mission: Metacognition. She also coordinates the Honors in Biology or BCMB program and manages the Department of Biology’s social media presence.
Labs & Teams: Dr. Ellis leads a research group that includes undergraduate students, guiding them in genetic and behavioral studies using Drosophila melanogaster. Her lab focuses on understanding the interplay between genetic variation and environmental influences on development and behavior.
